See you in 2018!

Eighth edition of Cape Town Festival of Beer the best yet

Celebrating its eighth edition, the Cape Town Festival of Beer hosted the most entertaining festival yet, with more than 10 000 attendees experiencing tasty food, live entertainment, karaoke, log rolling and of course, over 200 of the best beers available in South Africa.

Back at Hamilton’s Rugby Club for the 2017 Cape Town Festival of Beer, the event kicked off with the annual Brewers Braai as brewers from around the country gathered to prepare for the weekend, to network and to test their fellow brewers’ latest brews.

Friday saw the Festival kick off with an after-work party like no other, as festivalgoers streamed in to savour some of the best beer that South Africa, Scotland, Denmark and many others, have to offer, while artists such as Me and Mr Green had the crowd up off their feet.

Just Like Papa offered everyone the opportunity to test their balance in their specially-made log-rolling set-up. Needless to say the challenge was a massive hit.

Firestone journeyed down to the Cape in their customised combis, that would host a weekend of quality, comedic and atrocious combi karaoke as friends, family and strangers belted out their favourite tunes for everyone to hear.

Saturday was as popular as ever as hordes of SA’s beer lovers packed Hamilton’s and made sure the taps were flowing and the brewers were busy. Witty Festival regular, Dan Nicholl, made an appearance and the annual awards were handed out to the best beers of the Festival, as voted for by an independent, qualified judging panel.

Celebrity chef Pete Goffe-Wood headlined an incredible list of food stalls on show with his Kitchen Cowboys. DJ Ready D hit the decks and had festivalgoers partying deep into the night.

In what was one of the best-attended Sundays in the history of the Festival, families soaked up the Sunday sun while sipping on everything from ciders, to beers brewed with Atlantic Ocean water, while the kids were thoroughly entertained in the designated children’s area.

It’s safe to say that SA’s beer industry is in good hands. Iconic German brewmaster, Wolfgang Koedel of CBC, sang the praises of his fellow brewers. “I am proud of how far craft brewers in South Africa have come in general,” Koedel said. “Our brewers can definitely compete with the best in the world. We have extremely good beers.”

If 2017 is any indication of where things are headed, the 2018 Cape Town Festival of Beer will be even bigger and better than 2017. With brewers pushing the boundaries more and more, as local breweries refine their craft, 2018’s Festival is already a mouth-watering prospect.

Cheers to that!

The Festival is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere with more than 60 breweries offering over 200 beers and ciders which make the awards one of the most competitive beer awards in Africa and even the hemisphere. Brewers in attendance will all be vying for the top honours in seven categories: Best Lager, Best Hoppy Beer, Best Beer on Show, Best Dark Beer, Best Specialty Beer, Best Wheat Beer and Best Cider.

Brewers to battle it out for top awards at Cape Town Festival of Beer

The annual Cape Town Festival of Beer, now in its eighth year, will once again award a number of the best beers on show. Brewers in attendance will all be vying for top honours in the seven categories: Best Lager, Best Hoppy Beer, Best Beer on Show, Best Dark Beer, Best Speciality Beer, Best Wheat Beer and Best Cider.

The judging process will be carried out by independent group South Yeasters, a homebrewers club consisting of beer enthusiasts based in Cape Town. All judges will be Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) qualified – an internationally recognised program. The judging panel will be a combination of beer experts, beer enthusiasts and home brewers.

“The importance of winning these awards at the Cape Town Festival of Beer is really to alert the consumer to your brand, your beer, or even the style of beer that you’ve put out and it causes them to come to your stand,” said Head Brewer of Devil’s Peak Brewery, JC Steyn, who took home two awards in 2016, including Best Beer on Show.

“For us it’s not just about slapping a sticker on a bottle and selling it in a retail store; it’s about showing those 10 000 people attending the Cape Town Festival of Beer that we’ve produced something special and it tells them to come to our stand out of the 60-odd on offer. It says to them that this is a good beer, that they’re going to get a unique experience, and that’s just going to ignite the fire of Devil’s Peak within them.

In an industry becoming more and more competitive by the year, the awards set apart the best of the best.

“There are so any different beers and different producers, why would they [festivalgoers] come to us? So the award gets them to our stand and then once they are there, it allows us to show them the other beers we have on offer too,” Steyn added.

Festivalgoers can expect to taste a range of Devil’s Peak beers, among 60 other breweries, as they all push the boundaries of beer in the hopes of winning one of the seven awards on offer.

“I’m not going to give too much away as to what we’ll be bringing this year, I’ll keep that as a surprise. But once again we’ll be bringing a whole bunch of stuff that has never been tried before,” concluded Steyn.

Cape Town Festival of Beer to offer largest selection of ciders to date

The Cape Town Festival of Beer has grown tremendously in the past eight years. While the primary focus of The Festival remains beer, there will be a larger focus on ciders this year. Cideries from across the country and possibly abroad, will join the Cape Town Festival of Beer to add variety and treat festivalgoers to some of the best commercially available ciders on the market.

“While the beer industry is steadily growing, more recently we’ve seen a boom in the cider industry with what we call cideries, establishing themselves in the market,” said Cape Town Festival of Beer co-founder Martin Tucker. “We’re excited to offer festivalgoers a wider variety of ciders than ever before. It’s grown to the extent that we’ve recently even added an award specifically for Best Cider.”

Festivalgoers can look forward to tasting a number of ciders on offer, many of which will be in styles they may never have tried before. Sxollie Ciders, Cluver & Jack and Everson’s Cider are a few popular names expected to attend, while Birkenhead’s brand new cider range and the cutting edge ciders from Little Wolf will add to the increasing cider offering at the Cape Town Festival of Beer. Top breweries such as Little Wolf, Birkenhead and Alpha, are becoming increasingly involved in the cider section of the market.

“I think for us on the cider front, we have our two standard ciders, but we are looking to push the envelope and do some barrel aged ciders and some fruit infused ciders,” said Alpha Head Brewer JC Steyn. “In the US there are a bunch of different ciders. Even following beer trends – guys are trying dry-hopped, saison or spiced cider styles… so we’ll definitely be doing that in this area and looking at what consumers are looking for. Obviously it will take a little bit of education, but we’re used to that.”

With an increasing cider offering, the variety will be wider than ever at the 2017 Cape Town Festival of Beer, with festivalgoers guaranteed to taste a number of ciders and cider styles never experienced before.

A Festival of Beer for the Whole Family

Yep, you read correctly: this one’s for whole family. Now in its eighth year The Cape Town Festival of Beer is a three-day Festival celebrating all things beer and offering the widest range of commercially available beers in the Southern Hemisphere. The Festival offers more than 200 beers, from more than 60 brewers around South Africa and abroad.

Sunday, which is the final day of The Festival, is geared for the whole family. While Friday will play host to year-end office parties and people hitting the taps after work, Saturday is always the busiest day of The Festival. This makes Sunday the ideal day for families. While couples enjoy an ice cold beer, cider, or even glass of wine, they can kick back and enjoy the live entertainment while their kids play in the kiddies brought in especially for them. In addition to live music, there will be a range of artisan food trucks offering a wide selection of foods. Lunch has never been easier!

And the best part is that kids under the age of 12 are allowed free entrance.

The ultimate year-end office party

We’ve all been to a flopped year-end office get-together. After toiling away for 12 months, you and your colleagues assemble for that rare occasion when you all get to let the hair down. Only, it’s an awkward activity, you’re split up into teams and wind up with the same person you’ve shared a desk with for the past three years. Or it’s an all-you-can-eat lobster dinner, and you’re the guy with a shellfish allergy. Not cool.

Well there’s a solution to all that and it should come as no surprise that beer is in the answer. This year, the Cape Town Festival of Beer is hosting the ultimate year-end party on the first night of the Festival, Friday 1 December.

For those rare few that are unfamiliar with the Cape Town Festival of Beer, it’s a three-day Festival celebrating all things beer, now in its eighth year. It is the biggest festival of commercially available beer in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a celebration of beer like nothing you’ve experienced before, with more than 200 beers on offer, from more than 60 brewers in South Africa and abroad.

We’ve probably said enough already, but before you hit send on that email to your boss, suggesting a year-end gig that will save him a good few bucks and elevate you to legendary office status, there’s more.

This year there will be a bigger focus on ciders than ever before. From the well-known bottles making regular appearances around the braai, to uniquely made ciders emerging from South African cideries (the cider version of a brewery), there really is something for everyone.

Foodies, what better to pair with your pale ale than a mouth-watering meal from one of the various artisan food trucks? Throw live entertainment into the mix and we challenge you to find a colleague who won’t be grinning from ear to ear.

“But where would we all sit?” you ask. “We’re a big group. And what about the cost of meals?”

As seasoned year-end office party attendees, the organisers of The Festival have your back.
Every corporate hospitality package caters for a table of eight and includes: entry to the festival, where you can enjoy free tasters from every brewer, eight beer glasses, eight meal vouchers, an exclusive seating area reserved for your office, dedicated staff and security for the area, easy access to live entertainment, five beer vouchers for each member of the group (to fill that glass with your favourite brew), and finally a branding opportunity for the company.

It’s a no-brainer really.

So book before spots sell out by visiting Webtickets or contacting bookings@capetownfestivalofbeer.co.za
